long time scene stalwart darren price is stepping out on brand new label, kilsha music, with a fantastic ep of monster house tracks arriving. opener charm offensive is a fantastic ten-minute trip into loose limbed techno. drums, bass and percussion all wrap and weave around each other and melt your mind in the process. a rasping lead synth eventually becomes the focal point as background chords bring real soul. the brilliantly bristling everybody jack (uw live maschine mix) is a full fat track with busy textured synths, sci-fi effects and old school jack vocals that will really work the dance floor into a lather. its dynamic and ever evolving, with plenty of tense peaks and troughs throughout to keep the floor on its toes. the final vinyl track is this is house music, a deeper cut with warm, warbling bass and a muted acid line spraying about the mix. it slowly builds the pressure in heady fashion and is one to really hypnotise.

the collected double vinyl album contains a selection of the songs from level 42 s earlier years of -starchild- up until -tracie- and -take a look-. these tracks, specially remastered for vinyl, are exciting, standing the test of time, delivered by a timeless band.

celebrating osiris’ 50th release in two parts, label head simon shreeve unveils ‘deep summer’ as the first: a downtempo, vocal-led track with a pace and laid-back vibe not usually associated with his mønic alias. on the b side, a remix from none other than burial offers a distinctly smokier take on the track, full of percussive melodies that weave into surprisingly major-chord territory towards the end of the song’s ten minutes. this is a release that sees both artists pushing their respective music’s preconceptions.

f-dorm is a collaboration between connor camburn of litüus (avian), and visual artist conor ekstrom. commune follows the first f dorm cassette on mazurka and presents the first lp by the project. songs build upon unexpected repetition, wielding normally aggressive sounds into meditative loops with subtle textural evolutions. bursts of tape saturation, controlled waves of feedback, and linear drum beats shift and weave together through rhythmic delays. affected vocals speak low as if coaxing the listener further out into the nether regions of the mind. the strange cumulative mood of the record is difficult to describe: a transcendental state or a foul parallel from which the listener arises stronger or does not arise at all. mummies in civilian clothes -the master of the riddle-a dollmind haunts me in the penitentiary -the puttyman, naked inside -a mind made of cream

support for my life at 45 part 1 came from huey morgan and craig charles on bbc 6music the second instalment of dr rubbefunk s my life at 45 series. canvas cathedral on the a-side is a jazzy all-instrumental affair that will have you head-nodding like nobody s business. over uptempo hip-hop flavoured beats reminiscent of early 90s golden era hip hop, chopped and looped riffs from sax man ben castle give way to rolling melodies and rapid fire solos. on the flip, unstoppable gospel powerhouse izo fitzroy is here, flexing her soulful tones over one of the most elastic basslines ever pressed on wax. underpinned by signature laidback drums that groove like a classic rhythm section of yesteryear, tasteful guitars and chiming electric piano weave their way between izo s lyrics and, bingo! that s a little blahzay right there! always keen to give the djs a bonus, the good doctor even squeezes some canvas beats onto the 7- for good measure.

well, this is different… fourth kind the self titled mini album on omniverse records. it’s hard to pinpoint a genre with records like this, produced by marc mac of 4hero and similar to some of the 4hero output, it defies genre and fits somewhere in-between many. the production is heavily reliant on synthesisers and vintage drum machines in places but is full of real life and organic movements, this is partly down to the signature drums played by luke parkhouse. the only other guest spot is filled by nu jazz funker pascal strauss aka luman child who plays bass guitar on “take me to your sky” which along with “afterglows” are the closest we get to dance tracks, in most parts a 70s fusion feel is present. the short interlude type tracks are just as important and i would go as far as to say vital to telling the story. moogs, arps and solina strings weave patterns throughout, all in all, across the 10 tracks the album is a journey of mood and emotions. 180g pressing.

33 years after it s first release rick clarke s street soul simmerdown on local records, love with a stranger gets a much welcomed official reissue, remastered from the original tapes. check the dub! just peep that og artwork to get a taste of how this one s about to go down. written and produced by john collins, known for producing the specials - ghost town , love with a stranger perfectly encapsulates that 80s street soul sound. distinctly soulful, synthy slow jams, heavy on the bass with a touch of the low-slung, lovers rock vibrations about them. rick clarke s sultry sweet nothings weave their way irresistibly through this five minute gem, but for those that want to provide their own rendition over the top, the dub has been affectionately cut to the flip.
